The 9th Annual International Weight Stigma Conference was held in Denver, Colorado and online on June 28-29, 2023. NAAFA is a long-time conference supporter, and this year we sent a delegation of five people to the first-ever US-based edition of the conference. Read about the experience here.

Celebrating #SizeFreedom in New York City
On May 26, 2023 New York City Mayor Eric Adams signed bill 209-A into law, making height and weight discrimination illegal in New York City in the areas of housing, employment, and public accommodation. NAAFA friends and supporters, including bill sponsor Council Member Shaun Abreu, gathered in NYC in celebration of the bill’s passage.
Then, NAAFA Chair Tigress Oborn joined author/podcaster Aubrey Gordon at the Tribeca Film Festival for the debut of Your Fat Friend and for Celebrating Fat Victories, a Sunday afternoon dialogue between Tigress and Aubrey about the film, NYC’s new law, and developments across the fatosphere.

Exciting News from New York City!
On Thursday, May 12, 2023 the New York City Council voted 44-5 to pass INT 0209, the bill to outlaw height and weight discrimination in the city in employment, housing, and public accommodation.
We’ll be sharing more about this exciting news when the bill goes into effect. If you’re in New York (or want to be!) save the date for the afternoon of June 4th, when we’ll be celebrating this bill and the anniversary of the 1967 Fat-In with a party in the Big Apple!

If you have any exposure at all to the mainstream media, it’s no surprise to you that weight loss drugs are dominating the national discourse about fat. How do we ensure that our critiques of these pharmaceutical companies’ practices and messaging don’t make life harder for those in our community who use and need their products–including these very drugs– to live? Hollywood’s Anti-Fatness Extends Beyond The Whale
Part of the problem with The Whale is not the movie itself, but that the movie exists in a Hollywood landscape in which there are still very few fat people at all, and almost no positive depictions of fat people, along with who they look to for input on the lives of fat people.
