We feature educational resources in the NAAFA Newsletter to support our community in working to dismantle systemic racism. These resources are also shared on our social media, blog, and website. Resources vary from month to month, and may include historical information, tools for personal reflection, or information about how to get involved and make change. Many of the resources we suggest will be introductory resources, and this information is never intended to be full coverage on the complex and nuanced topics that are chosen each month. We encourage you to continue learning, and we especially hope you will seek out and support scholars, artists, creators, and activists who represent the communities most impacted by the topic of the month.
This edition, we invite you to join us in exploring resources about Disability Pride Month.
[Podcast] Intersectionality Between Racism & Ableism, Nikki Brown-Booker (What's Up WID) - On this engaging podcast, Nikki Brown-Booker, Program Officer of the Disability Inclusion Fund at Borealis Philanthropy is discussing her experiences as a Black and Filipino woman with a disability and the intersectionality between racism and ableism. She makes the case for solidarity in our social justice work, and reminds us how much disabled people have to offer our movements if we make it accessible to them.
Meditations on Blackness and Disability - This is an exploration of the intersection of Black identity and disability identity from a philosophical perspective. Dr. Derefe Kimarley Chevannes explores the question, “How do anti-Black racism and colonialism cause the Black experience to be inextricably linked with disability?”
Jen White Johnson, creator of A Black Neurodivergent Artist’s Manifesto and The Anti-Ableist Art Educators Manifesto - Jen is a brilliant thinker, artist, activist, and mother. She centers her Blackness, disability, and role as mother to a Black disabled child in her art and activism, creating tools and prompts to support others in their own advocacy and agency. From Jen: “My work explores the erasure of the Black-disabled community in digital and literary media. The visuals I make using photos and design are my acts of resistance that amplify conversations with the Disability community. It ignites the continued need to develop anti-racist, anti-ableist media.”
Indigeneity and Disability: The Teachings of our Ancestors and Being in Relation Towards Harmonious Outcomes - This is a great article to start learning (and unlearning) about disability and the Indigenous communities in the United States.
[Video] The Intersecting Disability and Race Implicit Association Test - This video talks about a research project created by the Council on Quality and Leadership (CQL) where they tried to figure out more about how intersectionality works. Looked at are attitudes towards disability and race, and they share some of their findings.
Reporting on Marginalized Disabled Communities- Whether you are a journalist or not, this resource provides useful guidance for how to write about or discuss people who experience the multiple marginalizations of ableism and racism.
Alice Wong — A Legacy of Disability Activism - Alice Wong was a fierce advocate for disability justice and for the visibility of all disabled people. This article from Ability Magazine reflects on her legacy, including discussion of the intersections of her Asian immigrant identity and her experiences as a disabled woman.
