We feature educational resources in the NAAFA Newsletter to support our community in working to dismantle systemic racism. These resources are also shared on our social media, blog, and website. Resources vary from month to month, and may include historical information, tools for personal reflection, or information about how to get involved and make change. Many of the resources we suggest will be introductory resources, and this information is never intended to be full coverage on the complex and nuanced topics that are chosen each month. We encourage you to continue learning, and we especially hope you will seek out and support scholars, artists, creators, and activists who represent the communities most impacted by the topic of the month.

This edition, we invite you to join us in exploring resources about Organizations & Initiatives Fighting Anti-Blackness.

  • [Videos] Fat Women of Color - This is an initiative that focuses on collective care with and for Black and brown women. Besides their informative and inspirational content on Instagram, they host “Friday Fat Chat,” a podcast with episodes on their YouTube channel.

  • The Founders of Black History Month - The founders of Black History Month, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH®), was formed in 1915. Their mission is to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community. In order to fight anti-Blackness, we need to know the truth about the history of all of us.

  • BLIS Collective is reimagining repair and reparations - America cannot become a true multi-racial democracy until we do some repair work for our past harms. The Black Liberation - Indigenous Sovereignty or BLIS Collective is a solidarity and action hub designed to shift culture and advance policies of transformation, healing and repair.

  • Race Forward - Race Forward’s mission is to “support communities and public institutions to achieve a just multiracial democratic society through governance that advances racial justice.” Their webinar series, #raceand, includes episodes like “#raceand: The Gender Binary” and “#raceand: The Fight for Reproductive Justice.” They also offer a variety of trainings on racial justice topics.

  • Black Voters Matter - This initiative promotes voter registration, provides policy advocacy, and supports individuals and organizations that are striving to obtain social justice throughout the year. Check out their podcast on YouTube, online voter toolbox, and resource page.

  • Color of Change - This is the nation’s largest online racial justice organization. Founded in 2005 in response to Hurricane Katrina, they help people across the US respond to injustice. They move decision-makers to eliminate policies that hold Black people back and adopt solutions for forward movement.

  • Stories to Tell - How do you feel when someone tells you their story? Do you relate, empathize, realize we have things in common? StoryCorps Griot is an initiative to ensure that the voices, experiences, and life stories of African Americans will be preserved and presented with dignity. To fight anti-Blackness, really listen to the stories of Black people.
