Anti-Racism Resources - August 2026
We feature educational resources in the NAAFA Newsletter to support our community in working to dismantle systemic racism. These resources are also shared on our social media, blog, and website. Resources vary from month to month, and may include historical information, tools for personal reflection, or information about how to get involved and make change. Many of the resources we suggest will be introductory resources, and this information is never intended to be full coverage on the complex and nuanced topics that are chosen each month. We encourage you to continue learning, and we especially hope you will seek out and support scholars, artists, creators, and activists who represent the communities most impacted by the topic of the month.
This edition, we invite you to join us in exploring resources about The Intersection of Racism and Anti-Fatness.
Diet culture is rooted in racism, white supremacy, and colonialism - This article delves into how racism and diet culture intersect and how diet culture upholds white supremacy. It also includes strategies to dismantle diet culture through anti-racist approaches.
The Size of Discrimination: Racism and Bias in the Fight Against the ‘Obesity Epidemic’ - This piece in Ms. Magazine makes the case for ending the focus on body size in health care, noting that “the classification between healthy and unhealthy regarding weight has a negative influence on marginalized communities of color, including African Americans, indigenous populations, and Hispanics… For many reasons, it is time to incorporate a social justice framework into health and wellness.”
Fostering Intersectional Body Image: Navigating anti-fatness in a country that tries to erase your existence - Josh Bolle, PhD shares how he’s gotten comfortable with the word “fat” and why clinicians - and all of us - should embrace intersectionality and fight anti-fatness. This article discusses intersectionality broadly, including key takeaways from his experience as a fat non-binary clinician of color who wants to see his colleagues hold space more effectively for BIPOC and gender-diverse fat clients.
