Anti-Racism Resources - February 2025
Each month, we feature educational resources in the NAAFA Newsletter to support our community in working to dismantle systemic racism. These resources are also shared on our social media, blog, and website. Resources vary from month to month, and may include historical information, tools for personal reflection, or information about how to get involved and make change. Many of the resources we suggest will be introductory resources, and this information is never intended to be full coverage on the complex and nuanced topics that are chosen each month. We encourage you to continue learning, and we especially hope you will seek out and support scholars, artists, creators, and activists who represent the communities most impacted by the topic of the month.
This month we invite you to join us in exploring resources about Black History Month.
Black history is America's history - Recently we have seen a greater push for Black History Month and DEI initiatives being removed both in the government, private enterprise, and in our schools. White-washing our history is bad for everyone. For example, Google has, within the last few months, eliminated all calendar references to cultural celebrations as “not being sustainable.” We, as individuals, must act to stop racists from eliminating the struggles and contributions of Black Americans from America’s history.
The 15 Best Places to Celebrate Black History Month in 2025 - Reading about history isn’t for everyone, but you may love to travel and visit places where you can experience history! This list includes some places you can go to see and really feel Black contributions to American life, key moments and places in the ongoing struggle for civil rights, and aspects of the Black experience that we don’t hear enough about.
Black History Is Local - Black History is American History. It is also your local story. Find those places teaching about that history and make it come alive for you. In the Seattle area, Northwest African American Museum is a great place to start that journey. Find that place near you and start unlearning all the literal “white washing” from society.
New Short Film Details Black Excellence in the Rodeo - It has been so exciting to see the way Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album has uplifted the history (and current state) of Black artists in country music (and less exciting to see the way some people take issue with that). However, this isn’t new. Black people created country music, and most early country songs are based of Black church hymns. To see Cowboy Carter widely celebrated has been incredible, and… this is neither Texas… nor is it the first time Black artists have touched country music..
