Speaker Bio

Chaya M. Milchtein (she/her) is an automotive educator, journalist, and author of Mechanic Shop Femme's Guide to Car Ownership. Chaya is a queer woman who has spent the last decade deeply entrenched in the automotive industry. She unapologetically stands out in a crowd, flaunting her fashion sense while teaching about cars, traveling the world, and breaking all kinds of norms.

Chaya made it her life's mission to educate women and queer people about their cars. She's dedicated her career to educating the average car owner, not automotive enthusiasts, about their cars - a career she found and built after aging out of the foster care system.

You'll find Chaya covered in the Chicago Tribune, Car and Driver, Car Talk, The Advocate, and NPR's Lifekit, Wisconsin PBS and many other prestigious publications. As a journalist, she's written for USA Today, AAA's Via Magazine, Real Simple, Parents, PBS's Next Avenue, and others.

Chaya's been sponsored by industry-leading brands, including CarMax, T-Mobile, iFixit, and TireRack, and she's taught her popular car classes at libraries, universities, non-profits, and businesses, including The Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, John Jay Criminal College, BMO Bank, and Vanderbilt University.

With over 790,000 followers across platforms (87% women), people look to Chaya to understand all things cars, from buying to selling, maintenance, insurance, and more. Follow Chaya on Instagram, Tiktok, Threads, Twitter, and YouTube @mechanicshopfemme
