In this edition of the NAAFA Webinar Series, fat activists Shilo George (she/they) and Isabella Carr (she/her) come together to talk about how you can advocate your yourself in life and in death by creating plans for your medical care and deathcare. Isabella Carr (she/her) is a writer, theologian, and deathworker specializing in end-of-life care, education, and advocacy for deviant bodies. Isabella is currently a graduate student at Harvard Divinity School and recently completed her internship with Death Doula LA as part of her field education. Her doula and research focus is a material and theological project titled, “Deathfat: Fat Funerals and Futurities”, which was selected for presentation at the 2023 American Academy of Religion Conference. As a doula, Isabella focuses on education and advocacy, as well as providing direct and compassionate care to fat people.

Isabella is originally from Portland, OR, and serves clients in the Northeast, Northwest, and Los Angeles area. She graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in religion and wrote her honors thesis on fat sexuality and spirituality. She has spent much of her professional career working with marginalized communities and is dedicated to accessibility and autonomy.

Shilo George, MS (she/they) is a force to be reckoned with in the realms of body sovereignty and healthcare navigation. As a Southern Cheyenne-Arapaho and Irish/Scottish trailblazer, Shilo brings a unique blend of cultural wisdom, resilience, and humor to her work. With an unwavering commitment to empowering individuals, she's on a mission to revolutionize how people navigate healthcare systems and claim their rightful power.

Known for her fierce dedication to dismantling weight stigma in medical spaces, Shilo is the visionary behind "Shilo George's Playbook for Power." This dynamic document empowers patients to advocate for themselves, challenge biases, and demand the respect they deserve. With a bold and unapologetic approach, she equips individuals with the tools to navigate healthcare confidently, unafraid to challenge oppressive systems.

Beyond her groundbreaking work on body sovereignty, Shilo's brilliance extends to trauma-informed practices and anti-racist work within organizations and government systems. Her training and presentations on systemic oppression, Native American history and culture, and white supremacy within professional culture have garnered her accolades from audiences worldwide.

With over two decades of experience as a social worker and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership and Policy, Shilo's expertise is deeply rooted in the welfare of communities of color. Her educational background, combined with her Native cultural and spiritual practices, gives her a holistic understanding of the effects of trauma on individuals and communities.

Shilo is a trailblazing educator, a tireless advocate for justice, and an unshakable pillar of support for those she serves. Her mission is clear: to foster healing, liberation, and equity in all spaces she touches. Prepare to be inspired and challenged as you witness Shilo George in action.
